Course Overview

UW-Stout's Kinesiology and Health Department's Bachelor of Science in Health, Wellness and Fitness (HWF) offers two concentrations to provide you with the skills and expertise to build a rewarding career as a health promotion specialist, health educator, community health workers, health educator, corporate wellness coach and health researcher.

According to U.S. News & World Report, there is a growing demand for fitness and wellness coordinators with the knowledge and skills to help people develop and sustain healthier lifestyles. We prepare you to help people implement their health goals, sustain life-changing behaviors and manage healthy progress.

Concentrations

Our multi-disciplinary approach includes two field experiences and allows you to focus your studies in a particular area of interest. Both concentrations offer hands-on experiences and business management skills that will give you a competitive edge when entering the profession or pursuing a masters degree.

The Health and Wellness Promotions concentration will prepare you to:

  • Establish health education and nutrition programs within businesses, fitness organizations and community organizations.
  • Consult within the health insurance industry on corporate health and wellness programs.
  • Effectively address public healthcare issues, disease prevention and health issues related to the use and abuse of drugs and alcohol. 
  • Prepare for Health Promotion Specialist certifications.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Fitness workers, personal trainers, group exercise instructors and fitness directors are increasingly called upon to serve more complex sets of the American population. The professional arena is demanding more highly trained and knowledgeable staff than ever before. Fitness centers, medical centers and corporate health and fitness programs require staff that has knowledge of fitness, nutrition, motivational strategies, management of injuries, legalities of injured worker systems, and risk management. The world of health, wellness, and fitness is changing and is requiring greater skill sets with fitness assessments, club management, nutrition assessments and fitness programs tailored to the needs of an increasingly diverse population.

Entry Requirement 

Admission Requirements:

  • Official TOEFL score: 
    • Minimum iBT (or MyBest) score of 70, or minimum paper-based score of 525.
  • Official IELTS score:
    • A minimum score of 6.0
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic)
    • A minimum score of 48
  • Duolingo English Test:
    • A minimum score of 95
  • Other:
  • Successful completion of UW-Stout's English as a Second Language (ESL) program.
  • Successful completion of an English language program affiliated with UW-Stout.
  • Graduate from a high school in the United States.
  • You have earned at least 15 transferable university-level credits from an accredited English medium-sized institution.
  • You have earned a grade of C or better in a course equivalent to UW-Stout's English 101: Composition 1.

Freshmen 

As a student accepted into one of the six BFA programs, please be aware of the following:

  • You will be required to submit a portfolio in the spring semester of your freshmen year to apply for acceptance into the intended BFA program. Portfolios will be evaluated by the School of Art and Design faculty. Through your first-year experience, you will be given the tools and skills required to prepare and submit the portfolio, and the necessary support to navigate the application process.

Transfer Students

  • All transfer students will be admitted as a Pre-Bachelor of Fine Arts (Pre-BFA) student.  Submit a portfolio and essay to be reviewed by a committee of the School of Art & Design faculty, who will determine direct admissions into the BFA major of your choice. The priority deadline is no later than Midnight on October 1st for spring admission and March 1st for fall admission. You will receive direction on how to submit your portfolio in your acceptance letter to UW-Stout.  
  • Submissions may be made after the priority date; however, there is no guarantee when it will be reviewed for a decision nor what art-specific coursework you may be able to get into after the review is completed and whether or not a registration for the next semester has begun.  There is a $10 application fee assessed at the time you electronically submit your portfolio.
