Course Overview

What you will study

Throughout your time on the Interior Design degree you will be encouraged to take risks, gain real-world experience and to develop your individuality as a creative Interior designer.

You will develop interior designs through creative research methods, sketching, analytical drawing and making. We use analogue and digital techniques to prototype our ideas; you will get a good understanding of computer programs such as AutoCAD, 3DSmax, Revit, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Sketch Up.

From year one you will be part of live projects, working with real clients and have many opportunities to present your ideas to them. You will gain a good understanding of scale and proportion so you can effectively design an interior space. Equally, you will form an excellent understanding of specifying interior finishes; materials, light, colour and pattern.

In year two you will continue to work on live projects with our industry partners. You will learn about conservation principles and the significance of historic buildings. You will develop an eye for detailed design and be confident in specifying and presenting your interior designs professionally. Whether you are working towards our one-year placement or a summer placement you will develop a portfolio and CV that will be complemented by feedback from industry portfolio reviews.

The third year is about gaining access to the workplace. Through our extensive alumni and industry contacts, we focus on the transition from university to the workplace. Your final major project is also your opportunity to work on a project focusing on your interests as a designer, supported by USW Interior Design academics and industry mentors. For these reasons, many students secure employment in the industry before they graduate.

Teaching

Students on the Interior Design course will learn through lectures, seminars, tutorials, workshops and computer laboratories, presenting and debating your work with fellow students. In our professional creative environment with our Cardiff campus, you will learn how to communicate your design ideas through manual draughting and computer-drawing programmes such as AutoCAD and 3D StudioMax.
