Educational Goals

  1. Prepare generalist social workers that are able to integrate the knowledge, values and skills of the social work profession for competent practice in settings with individuals, families, groups, organizations, institutions, and communities.
  2. Acculturate students to the profession of social work through the study of its history, purposes, and philosophy.
  3. Prepare students to practice ethically with diverse populations and systems of all sizes, to alleviate poverty and oppression and to provide social and economic justice for all citizens.
  4. Provide students with content about social contexts of social work practice, the changing nature of those contexts, the behavior found in systems, and the dynamics of change.
  5. Prepare students who will demonstrate a commitment to continue life-long learning and professional growth, which may include graduate education in social work and other disciplines.

Entry Requirement 

Academic Requirements:

A minimum grade of C is required in all social work courses. No student may enroll in a social work course until a minimum grade of C has been obtained in prerequisite courses. No social work course may be taken more than two times. A minimum GPA of 2.5 is required in the 46-hour block of required professional (SW) courses in order for a student to graduate with this degree. Majors progress through the curriculum by passing courses in a sequential fashion. Majors failing to reflect both an understanding and an endorsement of the Social Work Code of Ethics in course assignments, exams, and in required community service activities will be advised to seek another major.

Course Requirements:

Specific requirements for the major include SW 201 OR 315, 216 OR 316, 321, 322, 330, 335, 340, 417, 436, 437, 438, 450, 495, and 496.

Freshman Requirements:

  • Official English language transcripts from secondary school(s) attended; degree certificate if already graduated
  • Evidence of college preparatory curriculum, achieving a minimum 3.00 cumulative high school grade-point-average on a 4.00 scale (or its equivalent).

Transfer Requirements:

  • Official English language transcripts from all colleges and universities attended; degree certificate if already graduated.
  • Minimum 2.50 cumulative college or university grade-point-average on a 4.00 scale (or its equivalent).
  • Students who have completed less than 30 credits (or the equivalent of one year of full-time enrollment) at a college or university: Official English language transcripts and degree certificates from secondary school(s).

International Freshman/Transfer applicants graduating from a secondary school or transferring from a college or university in the U.S., whether in Mississippi or elsewhere, must meet the admissions requirements as listed in the section titled Admission of Freshman and Transfer Students in this catalog. Additionally, they must provide:

  1. Copy of passport identification pages, if available, to help ensure accuracy of name and birth date
  2. Affidavit of Financial Support if intending to hold F-1 or J-1 visa status. Although not required for admission, submitting the affidavit with other application materials expedites the admissions/enrollment process.
  3. English proficiency test score. Please see below.
  4. Copy of their U.S. visa or I-94 form (H4, L2, etc.), permanent resident card, or other documentation related to one’s status in the U.S.
