Course Overview

English majors develop expert skills as readers, writers, and critical thinkers, enabling them to contribute to conversations and shape debates about all kinds of texts and discourse, in both academic and real-world contexts.

With a wide choice of courses in literature, creative writing, rhetoric and composition, and film, the English major allows flexibility to individualize your program of study.

Because most English courses are small, you will receive personal attention from professors who inspire and challenge. Our faculty members represent a diverse range of interests and expertise, and they bring the passion and wisdom of their scholarly accomplishments into the classroom. As teachers and advisers, they are devoted to helping you grow and succeed.

As an English major, you’ll be required to demonstrate proficiency in Standard Written English by successfully completing one or more first-year composition courses. And in order to prepare you for work in our global society, you will also complete a language requirement. You may satisfy the requirement by taking a proficiency examination, completing an intermediate-level language course, or participating in an approved education abroad experience.
