Course Overview

The program is structured to give basic knowledge in engineering in an interdisciplinary manner, allowing students to enhance their engineering education with courses from complementary areas of study.

Our graduate programs are designed for working professionals and offer ample opportunities for hands-on research.

Degree Requirements

The master of engineering in civil engineering requires 27 credit hours of coursework and 3 credit hours of master’s report work.

  • 15 credit hours of course work must be completed with civil engineering classes; this includes the master's report hours.
  • 15 credit hours may be completed outside of the civil engineering department in related disciplines that supplement the student's area of study. This requirement gives the master of engineering degree the ability to be interdisciplinary and tailored to the student's exact area of interest.

Admission Requirements:

  • Application fee – $50 domestic; $75 international
  • Statement of purpose – must be an original essay submitted with the application. Scanned copies will not be accepted for submission.
  • Resume – must be submitted with the application
    • Bioengineering applicants must complete essay questions and an application background survey. 
  • Official transcripts – we require one official copy of each previous transcript.
  • Letters of recommendation – three are required (two for civil engineering); a 4th is optional
  • Official GRE scores – the college has temporarily suspended the evaluation of GRE scores for admission decisions through the 2022 application cycle. If choosing to submit, send scores officially through ETS using code #4875. A preferred minimum score of 300+.

NOTE: Written application materials submitted are scanned for plagiarism​ and are added to a local database used for plagiarism detection.

English Language Requirements:

In addition to the above requirements, applicants earning from non-English speaking countries need to demonstrate English language proficiency as outlined below:

  • TOEFL: Minimum TOEFL score accepted: 79 IBT / 537 PBT (CU Denver institutional code: 4875)
  • IELTS: Minimum IELTS score accepted: 6.5
  • Duolingo: Minimum Duolingo score accepted: 105
  • PTE Academic: minimum PTE Academic score accepted: 51

Please allow 3 weeks from test date for all GRE and ELP scores to post to your student portal.

Submitting IELTS scores: Requests for score delivery to institutions must be submitted directly to the test center where you took the IELTS test. Scores are available approximately 13 days from the test date. Please follow the directions below when submitting requests for test scores.
