Course Overview

Equivalent to Year 3 of a BA undergraduate degree, this course enables you to 'top-up' an existing qualification such as a foundation degree or an HND. You'll join us at level 6 with your previous knowledge and accredited learning, achieving a greater level of independence with self-managed research, study and practice.

This course focuses your existing business and management knowledge on the fast-moving fashion industry. You’ll learn about capturing and creating customer value, ethical behaviour and sustainability within fashion, and the place of entrepreneurship in the development of the industry.

Based at our Epsom campus as part of our Business School portfolio, this course allows you to advance your professional practice in business while focusing on your fashion interests. You’ll benefit from the exceptional teaching staff and resources that UCA has to offer and you’ll be studying just a stone’s throw away from London.

Year 1 (equivalent in level to year 3 of BA course)

During this top-up year, you achieve a greater level of independence with self-managed research, study, and practice, resulting in a final business project.

Business Research
This unit aims to develop your skills of independent inquiry and critical analysis by undertaking a sustained research project. You will be expected to address the elements that make up formal research including the research proposal, research methodologies, action planning, carrying out the research itself, and presenting both primary and secondary findings.

Fashion Business Strategy
You will learn, in this unit, to develop knowledge and understanding of the terminology of strategy and its relevance to strategic decision-making within the fashion industry. You will learn the fundamental decisions made in the field of strategy covering three strategic dimensions i.e. strategy process, strategy content and strategy context.

Marketing Strategy and Planning for Fashion
The strategy is what it is you want to achieve and the plan is how you are going to do it – we’ll teach you how to do both, gaining a fundamental understanding of marketing concepts and your insights gained in differentiating the role of the marketing manager in domestic and international marketing decision making (Global Marketing), as well as the practical knowledge and skills of the marketing process.

Enterprise Sustainability and Business Ethics in Fashion
Ethical behaviour and corporate social responsibility can bring significant benefits to a business and as sustainability now forms part of the everyday consciousness of the consumer its presence will be permanent. We will present you with the concept of business ethics and develop your abilities to examine its relevance to the fashion industry.

Entrepreneurship and Creativity in Fashion Industries
This unit provides an overall insight into entrepreneurship and the creative approaches to the study of entrepreneurship. You will investigate the factors, which underpin successful entrepreneurship activities for small and medium-sized organisations. You will also explore issues related to individuals and enterprise entrepreneurial mint-set, as well as small and family businesses.

Final Fashion Business Project
Your Final Business Project allows you to develop your skillset of independent inquiry enabling you to undertake a sustained research investigation of direct relevance to your area of interest and professional development.

Entry Requirement 

Academic Requirements:

The standard entry requirements* for this course are:

  • 240 credits from a relevant degree (120 credits at level 4 and 120 credits at level 5), with a minimum of 55% overall
  • Foundation Degree in a relevant subject
  • Higher National Diploma in a relevant subject

And/or Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL)

In recognition that you may already have a relevant professional qualification or appropriate working experience in the relevant industries, APEL may be accepted for entry into the course. This will be based on the partnership articulations and will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Other relevant and equivalent Level 3 the UK and international qualifications are considered on an individual basis, and we encourage students from diverse educational backgrounds to apply.

*We occasionally make offers that are lower than the standard entry criteria, to students who have faced difficulties that have affected their performance and who were expected to achieve higher results.

International Baccalaureate

If you are studying the International Baccalaureate, the number of points you need to achieve can vary depending on the strength of your portfolio and the number of Higher Level points you achieve. As a guide, the number of points applicants are usually asked to achieve is

  • Bachelor’s courses (except BA (Hons) Architecture): 27 total points. 
  • BA (Hons) Architecture: 29 points.
  • Four Year Bachelor’s and Further Education Courses: minimum of 24 points.

We do occasionally make offers lower than this entry criteria, to students with a strong portfolio or those who have faced difficulties that have affected their performance and who were expected to achieve a higher result.
