Quantity surveyors are significant professionals who are highly involved, but not limited to - the building and construction industry. The main role of a quantity surveyor is to manage all costs relating to building and civil engineering projects, from its initial stage to the closing of the final account. This means that a quantity surveyor plays a pertinent role in any construction team. In recent years, the quantity surveyor position has advanced into the idea of sustainable development. This translates to providing opportunities for jobs within the area of Green Costing, Life Cycle Costing / Life Cycle Assessment, Carbon Footprint, Land Quality Reporting, Green Building Assessment and Building Information Model (BIM). A quantity surveyor holds multiple and significant roles in sustainable construction. A quantity surveyor's tasks include minimising the cost of a project to enhancing value for money, while ensuring the statutory building regulations are met to the required standards and the utmost quality. In doing so, a quantity surveyor prepares estimates, costs of work and monitors financial progress of the project. Responsibilities can come from being as an in-house worker, as well as a consultant to a client or a contractor. While many would perceive that quantity surveyors are only fitted for the construction industry, job opportunities however, are unlimited. Other sectors that benefit from the involvement quantity surveyors range from industries such as oil and gas, telecommunication, property development, to education, banking, and manufacturing. In addition to that, quantity surveyors have also became successful as advisors in consulting legal and insurance companies.
