Course Overview

If you want a high-level expertise of pure and applied mathematics—and want to relate that knowledge to outside disciplines—this Ph.D. program might be for you.

But before you enter the program, you'll be tested on your knowledge of real analysis and applied linear algebra. Once you've passed, you can begin your required 54 semester hours of courses at the 600 and 700 level. Of these 54, at least 18 must be in applied mathematics, and a minimum of 12 should be in an outside field, such as computer science or physics. In the end, you'll be asked to pass a comprehensive exam, prepare a dissertation, and more. Perhaps most exciting of all, we'll give you real-world experience, and we've secured extensive outside grant support to that end. This money helps fund both your research and doctoral work, and enables you to interact not just with our faculty, but with the global mathematical community. You'll attend professional meetings as well as network with faculty at other universities across the U.S. and the world.
