Course Overview

For it is through these disciplines that educational professionals and others engaged in the educational enterprise are able to ask the relevant questions about the nature of students and their world and make the most appropriate decisions with regards to the education of a diverse body of students.

Program Benefits

The Educational Foundations Program seeks to challenge educators to develop an understanding of the theoretical, conceptual, and policy-related underpinnings of the educational enterprise and its various curriculum and instructional approaches. Teachers, school administrators, and other related professionals are challenged to these ends through the Educational Foundations undergraduate and graduate course sequence in philosophy and history, development and individual difference, and educational psychology.

Through this Educational Foundations coursework, students will:

  • Acquire an extensive knowledge base and seek out opportunities to develop, demonstrate and apply that knowledge to various academic and professional settings.
  • Connect theory and practice in order to promote effective decision-making, critical analysis, and synthesis.
  • Engage in critical reflective thinking.
  • Learn the value of human diversity and respect varied talents and perspectives.
  • Develop a professional philosophy that exemplifies individual identity and integrity.
  • Learn the value of, and promote lifelong learning.
  • Develop and employ metacognitive strategies that can be applied to and beneficial within various academic and professional settings.

Career Options

The Educational Foundations Program offers coursework that supports various teacher education programs across the Goodwin College of Education, including Early Childhood Education, Bilingual Bicultural and Elementary Education, Secondary and K-12 Education, and Special Education. In addition, the Educational Foundations Program offers coursework that supports other disciplines and career options in fields such as social work, sociology, psychology, justice students, and health and wellness.

Entry Requirement 

Admission Requirements:

High School Transcript (required for current high school students)

High school juniors and seniors: You must provide an official high school transcript to the Admissions Office at the time of your application for admission. A letter of support and recommendation from your high school principal is also required.

ACT or SAT scores (required for current high school students)

High school juniors and seniors: Contact SAT or ACT to arrange for your test score to be sent electronically to the Admissions Office, or if you or the ACT or SAT will mail your test score to the Admissions Office, make sure the original sealed envelope has not been opened. Only sealed envelopes will be accepted.

Application fee

The $30 application fee is payable by mail (check or money order), online (debit or credit card) or in-person (cash, check, money order, debit, or credit card).

Additional Requirements for International Applicants

An international applicant is a foreign student who plans to apply for or is currently in the United States on a non-immigrant student visa. As an international applicant, you are required to fulfill all of the admission requirements and submit all the required documents that domestic applicants do. Additionally, you must demonstrate that you meet eligibility requirements for:

  • Non-immigrant student visa status
  • English language proficiency
