Course Overview

Through classroom, laboratory, and internship experience, you’ll develop skills in counseling, diagnosis, treatment planning, group facilitation and crisis management. You’ll also learn how to respect clients' rights and understand the complexity of addiction illnesses. This degree prepares you for entry-level work in licensed AODA facilities such as clinics, hospitals and community residential facilities, as well as correctional facilities, employee or student assistance programs, and various community and social service agencies.

Program Outcomes

  • Adhere to accepted ethical and behavioral standards of conduct, legal regulations, and continue professional development, including technological advances in the profession.
  • Use a systematic screening assessment and level of care placement approach to clinical evaluation to include UPC and/or ASAM criteria.
  • Collaborate with members of an interdisciplinary team and the client to develop an individualized treatment plan.
  • Facilitate the process of referral to support systems and community resources to meet the client’s continuing care needs.
  • Provide case management services that include the coordination of available resources to focus on implementation and evaluation of the ongoing treatment plan.
  • Perform individual and group counseling with alcohol and drug abuse clients.
  • Educate clients and families with information on risks, prevention, treatment, and recovery resources related to alcohol and drug abuse.
  • Document the screening/intake process, assessment, treatment plan and prepare written reports, clinical progress notes, discharge summaries, and other client related data.

Entry Requirement 

An academic skills assessment is required for admission into this program or the following: High School GPA of 2.75 or higher (last 10 years) OR provide completion of associate’s or higher degree OR; 165 or higher on your 2014 series GED tests OR; ACT OR SAT OR Accuplacer OR Companion OR Compass (last 3 years) to waive to the general education level.
