Course Overview

Accredited by the Royal Society of Biology, this research-led course is ideal for careers in the medical and healthcare professions or laboratory science. It integrates scientific research and clinical skills to develop your understanding of the human body in health and disease.

You will be taught by experienced, research-active academics and clinical experts who will present the latest advances in medicine and science, and study a range of topics, including Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Inflammation and Immunobiology, Cancer Therapeutics and Nutrition Through the Lifespan. As the course progresses, you will be introduced to more advanced medical topics, and start to relate the understanding of normal healthy physiology with pathological processes.

You can choose to enhance your employability through an optional sandwich year work placement, allowing you to gain hands-on experience and develop practical and professional skills that you can apply to your learning.

Many of our graduates have pursued careers in scientific research, teaching and medical writing, and upon completion, you can also choose to progress to graduate entry medicine and dentistry courses.

Entry Requirement 

Academic Requirements:

  • A minimum of 120 UCAS points from at least two A levels. One A level must be at grade C or above in either Biology, Chemistry or Human Biology, or

  • BTEC National Diploma Science - Distinction/ Distinction/ Merit, or
  • BTEC Extended Diploma Science - Distinction/ Distinction/ Merit

Plus, five GSCEs at grade 4 or above, including Maths and English

Alternative qualifications include:

  • Pass QAA Accredited Access to Higher Education (Science) overall 120 UCAS tariff with at least 21 Level 3 credits at Distinction and 24 Level 3 credits at Merit from Science Subject (Chemistry/Biology).
    GCSE English and Maths at C (4) or above are required as separate qualifications.

We will normally require students to have had a break from full-time education before undertaking the Access course.

  • International Baccalaureate: 28+ with six higher-level points in Chemistry or Biology.

Personal statement selection criteria

  • Clear communication skills, including good grammar and spelling
  • Information relevant to the course applied for
  • Interest in the course demonstrated with explanation and evidence
  • If relevant for the course - work and life experience

We welcome applications from mature students with non-standard qualifications

English Language Requirements:

If English is not your first language an IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent when you start the course is essential. English language tuition, delivered by our British Council accredited Centre for English Language Learning (CELL), is available both before and during the course.

Tuition fees for EU students: £9250 with our EU undergraduate transitional scholarship
