Course Overview

The program provides for concentrated study in at least two of these content areas: Mathematics, Language Arts, Science, Social Studies. Students are prepared to be highly effective and qualified to teach in high needs schools and districts. Program completers receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and a license to teach grades 4 through 9.

The program of study focuses on the nature and needs of early adolescents. Pre-service teachers learn how to design, deliver, and evaluate instruction that meets those needs. Coursework every term is accentuated with a clinical experience. By the end of the program, pre-service teachers will have has 700 hours in the field observing, tutoring, and teaching middle and junior-high-school students. Knowledge of pre-service teachers is built using inquiry and reflection upon the interplay of the courses and field experiences. This model, similar to that use in the medical professions, ensures a rigorous preparation and thus increased likelihood of being hired, and ready to teach, upon graduation.
