Course Overview

The BSc in Speech and Language Science is a non-clinical degree intended for students who are looking for a career or further study in human communication. This course equips students with a thorough understanding of the processes involved in speech and language. This programme provides an excellent basis for further postgraduate study in areas such as Speech and Language Therapy, Audiology, Forensic Phonetics and Linguistics, Intercultural Communication, Language Teaching, Language Documentation, Speech Technology and Library Science.

Objectives

As a student on the BSc (Hons) Speech and Language Science course you will develop crucial skills in analytical thinking, written and verbal communication, critical appraisal, team-working, and organisation. This flexible and innovative degree provides a fundamental understanding of how human communication develops, how it works, and how it can break down.

This non-clinical degree provides knowledge and understanding of subjects including speech and hearing sciences, linguistics, and psychology and their application to normal and impaired human communication. This is a unique course that is academically challenging with a strong focus on an understanding and application of research. The focus on developing an understanding of the process of human communication is supplemented by various modules ranging from psychology to media and forensic applications of speech research.

Entry Requirement 

Course Requirements:

  • A' Level: BBC
  • Tariff: 112 UCAS tariff points (typically BBC or BCC with a relevant EPQ).
  • BTEC: DDD - Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care or Science-related subject.
  • IB: 29 points.

The following is also required:

  • GCSE: A minimum of five passes grade 4 (C) in GCSE, including English and Mathematics. GCSE requirements for applicants studying an Access to HE Diploma are detailed below.

English Language Requirements:

If your first language is not English, we will require evidence of English language proficiency. Minimum requirements are:

  • TOEFL iBT: 79 overall with at least 24 in Writing, 19 in reading and Listening and 20 in Speaking sections.
