Course Overview

Each research student is supported by a team of supervisors appointed for the particular study.

In the School of Social Sciences, staff has recognised standing, nationally and internationally, in the following broad areas:

  • Understanding crime and punishment;
  • The study of all aspects of psychology;
  • The exploration of social structures and change.

Our PhD students benefit from regular supervision meetings with academics who are experts in their field. They have the opportunity to become members of our proactive research community made up of academics, postgraduate researchers, and external partners.

Entry Requirement 

Admission Requirements:

To apply for our Art and Design Ph.D. research degree you should have, or expect to be awarded, a Masters degree in a relevant subject area from a British or overseas university.

Exceptional candidates without a Master's degree, but holding a first-class Bachelors degree in a relevant subject area, may be considered.

We also welcome enquiries from potential Ph.D. researchers without formal academic qualifications but with appropriate levels of professional experience.

If you intend to take a practice-led research approach to your Ph.D. study, then you will be expected to show your portfolio as part of the application process, normally at the formal interview stage.

Please send us an initial Ph.D. inquiry containing your brief Ph.D. research proposal (max. 500 words), and/or any questions or queries you may have.

UCAS tariff

Under the current tariff, a typical standard offer from Birmingham City University would be BBC at A-Level, DMM in a BTEC Extended Diploma, or D*D* in a BTEC Diploma, which equates to 280 tariff points.

Under the new UCAS tariff, this will equate to 112 points.

English Language Requirements

International Students

Valid Academic IELTS certificate with an overall score of 7.0 with no band below 6.5 or equivalent.

Applicants are required to hold a minimum of a 2:1 Honours degree, in a discipline related to social sciences, to be considered for a PhD. Some PhD opportunities, such as those funded by a particular research council, may additionally require a Master's level degree.

6.5 overall with a minimum of 6.0 in each category

If you do not meet the required IELTS score, you may be eligible for one of our pre-sessional English courses. Please note that you must have a Secure English Language Test (SELT) to study on the pre-sessional English course.
